Reading reflections in the Bookinglass

An expat with a love of fiction

About me and this blog

Philippa TicknerIam an archaeology graduate, looking for a way to get out there into the real wide world and at the same time escaping it as much as possible. Years ago, whilst I was living in Togo, I started noting down what books I had read in a small blue book, what I thought about them and how many pages they were (important to me at the time as a way to quantify my reading prowess). Now I just want to be able to remember what I read and what was happening in my life when I was reading that book. Because like so many people, books are important to me because my perceptions are constantly changing because of them. A quotation that perfectly puts the way I think about books, is Hector from ‘The History Boys’:

‘The best moments in reading are when you come across something – a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things – that you’d thought special, particular to you. And here it is, set down by someone else, a person you’ve never met, maybe even someone long dead. And it’s as if a hand has come out, and taken yours.’

I hope that some things that I say can do the same.

I am currently living in Berlin, I somehow managed to spend most of my life abroad, it surprises everyone when they meet me as I sound so British! I would love to meet other expats and TCKs out there in the blogosphere.

If you fancy contacting me try: pearpip (at) hotmail (dot) com. I also love comments, they make me go all gooey inside.
This is my favourite post so far, about an inspirational image of my most-loved book character, Lyra. If you want to know a little more about me I suggest to start there.
Alternatively see what goes on in Berlin on an average Saturday afternoon.

  1. Hi Zara,

Ages ago you took part in a shoe voucher give-away on my blog Style High Club. Well, the winner of the competition never got in touch with me so I’ve picked another winner – you!

It would be great if you could email me your address so we can get the voucher to you!

    Many thanks!

  2. Hi! Your ‘about me’ is very interesting! You lived in Togo! My husband and I lived in Senegal for 2 years. I used to love reading when I was much younger like in middle school and then I stopped reading. I wish I would make more time to read. Because I blog, I don’t have much time for anything else and it is a shame. I need to start picking up books again. The quote you shared on your page is very true. I agree with you that reading makes your perspectives change constantly. Thank you for making me notice what I’m lacking in my life!
